UKIM has a rich history. The merger of two churches March 2008 became one the greatest pivotal point in both churches history.
Gethsemane Church of Christ, originally Solomon Temple, was founded in 1954 by Pastor P. Marshall. Approximately four years later 1958, Pastor Wesley Jenkins with wife Mary Jenkins and their five children became Pastor of Solomon Temple. The church name was later changed to Gethsemane Church of Christ, and in 1973, Pastor Jenkins purchased a building at 1589 Stratford Avenue.
In 1989 Bishop Carol P. Lloyd became Pastor after the passing of Pastor Jenkins.
Bishop Lloyd is not a stranger to longevity; she remained a faithful member of Gethsemane for over 40 years. She received various community awards and was once featured in the Connecticut Post. Her many years on the radio (wdjz) reached and helped many in times of need as they listened to good gospel music. Together with the faithful members of Gethsemane, Bishop Lloyd paid off the mortgage on the church building 1997.
Kingdom Builders Ministries was founded June 2005 by Senior Pastor Ken Smith, First Lady Lisa Smith and their three children. Pastor Ken and Lady Lisa with the Lords help, in a short time of 2 ½ years, grew the ministry from 5 to 20 new members (Adults and Children). Pastor Ken and Lady Lisa are not strangers to new church beginnings and church growth. They were among the first 10 original members of Calvary Temple (Bishop John Thompson). Together, Pastor Ken and Lady Lisa witnessed church growth from 10 to well over 200 members. During the 14 years at Calvary, Pastor Ken and Lady Lisa worked tediously in high level Pastoral and leadership positions. While pastoring Kingdom Builders, Pastor Ken and Lady Lisa did Radio ministry, started Angel Food, Youth, and Multicultural, Multi-lateral church worship gatherings.
United Kingdom is lead by Bishop Carol Lloyd, Senior Pastor Ken Smith and his wife First Lady Lisa Smith. Together, they serve the people in their unique roles as leaders. They are determined to face the challenges remember the past, embrace the future ahead, and walk in the expectation of Gods’ promises.
UKIM is Moving from Doing Church to Being Church
The move is from seeing church as a location where we do certain things to an identity. It is less about ritual and more about relationship. It is less about talk and more about action. In a nutshell it is a perspective that says salt is only “playing salt” when it sits in the container. It actually acts as salt when it is sprinkled onto what it was intended to come into contact with and fulfill its purpose. That is when salt is really salt. When Christians get out of the walls of the building and actively engage the world in the name of Jesus Christ then the church starts being the church and our worship inside those walls becomes that much more meaningful.
